Evangel captures NACA title

The Evangel Christian Lightning captured the 2013 National Association of Christian Athletes’ Football National Championship by defeating The Webb School, 35-14.
After neither school scored in the first, Webb broke the tie with a rushing touchdown to go up 6-0 following a missed extra point. A punt snapped out of the back of the end zone led to a safety, giving Webb an 8-0 lead with 10:20 left in the half.
Evangel answered when Caleb Hoge hauled in a 86-yard strike from Andrew Thompson for a score. Dru Bell’s extra point made the score 8-7 with 6:05 left in the second quarter.
Evangel took the lead on a 3-yard run by Nate Scott with two seconds left in the half. Bell’s kick was good, and the Lightning led, 14-8.
Webb opened the second half up with a score and a two-point play to tie the game at 14-14.
It was as close to the lead as Webb got for the rest of the game, as Evangel scored with Grant Webster took the ball in from three yards out to make it 21-14 following Bell’s extra point.
Scott scored a 16-yard rushing touchdown with 1:59 left in the third quarter. Bell’s extra point made it 28-14 in favor of Evangel.
Pete Sullivan put the game on ice with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:14 left in the game. Bell’s extra point sealed the 35-14 victory, as well as the NACA crown for the Lightning.
Sullivan led all rushers with 63 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Scott had 110 yards passing on 3-of-7 attempts completed. Josh Letson led all receivers with 98 yards on two catches, while Tyler Byrd had five solo tackles, four assists and a fumble recovery.
