An Alabaster man is being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $70,000 after he was arrested and charged with a Nov. 16 robbery off Shelby County 11.

Alabaster police arrested 19-year-old Justin Edward Catlin on Nov. 20 and charged him with counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree assault.

The arrest came a few days after Catlin allegedly assaulted a homeowner on Bare Tree Drive during a Nov. 16 robbery at about 1:05 p.m., said Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney.

“The victim in the residence was assaulted and transported to Shelby Baptist, where they were treated and eventually released,” Rigney said, noting the victim suffered non life-threatening injuries in the incident.

On Nov. 21, Rigney said Catlin allegedly was armed with a weapon during the time of the incident, but said he was not yet able to release the type of weapon.

“That is still being investigated,” Rigney said. “He did enter the house and assault the victim and take items by force.”

Catlin allegedly stole a wallet containing about $325 and a cell phone from the victim.

After investigating the incident, Alabaster police located Catlin in Birmingham and arrested him on Nov. 20, Rigney said.

According to Alabama law, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary both are Class A felonies. Second-degree assault is a Class C felony. If convicted of the crimes, Catlin could face a minimum of 21 years in prison.
