Hospitalized jail inmate dies

COLUMBIANA – An inmate of the Shelby County Jail has died after sustaining serious injuries at the jail Dec. 9, according to a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Steven Ray Dismuke, 44, of Jakin, Ga., was injured and sustained serious injuries when he fell at the jail Dec. 9, the release said. Dismuke was treated my medical personnel at the jail before being transported to a local hospital.

Hospital personnel notified the Sheriff’s Office of Dismuke’s death Dec. 12, according to the release, which said Dismuke died “as a result of his injuries.”

A preliminary investigation revealed that Dismuke’s injuries did not occur as a result of actions taken by other jail inmates or jail personnel, the release said.

Dismuke was arrested on Nov. 30 by the Pelham Police Department and has been charged with first-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He was being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $10,000.

Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry has asked the Alabama Bureau of Investigation to investigate the events leading up to Dismuke’s injuries.
