A 33-year-old Alabaster woman has been released from the Shelby County Jail on a $30,000 bond after deputies said she gave birth to a child with traces of cocaine in its bloodstream in September.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrested Teresa Harris on Dec. 20 and charged her with one felony count of chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced. Harris listed an address on 11^th Avenue Southeast in Alabaster in court records.

She posted a $30,000 bond the day after she was booked into the Shelby County Jail, according to jail records.

According to her arrest warrant, Harris allegedly “gave birth to a child (who) tested positive for cocaine” in September. The cocaine exposure allegedly “resulted in a serious physical injury,” read the arrest warrant.

According to Alabama law, a person commits chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced when they “knowingly, recklessly or intentionally cause or permit a child to be exposed to, to ingest or inhale, or to have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance or drug paraphernalia.”

The crime is a Class C felony. If convicted, Harris could face up to 10 years in prison for the crime.

Harris is scheduled to appear in the Shelby County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 15. As of Dec. 23, no defense attorney was listed for Harris.
