CALERA — Tyesha Haynes had 14 points, three assists and four steals as host Calera cruised to a 50-15 win over Class 4A Area 4 rival West Blocton on January 2.

Keyanna Gayden’s 11 points and Kalen Starks’ 10 helped give the Eagles a trio of scorers in double figures, while Gayden also amassed four rebounds and two steals. Breonna Caldwell followed with nine points as Calera improved to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in Area 4.

“(The one-sided game) gave an opportunity for a lot of the younger (players) to play and see where they had progressed, and it went very well to be honest with you,” said Calera head coach James Knowles. “We’ve got a lot of work to do with the younger ones. The older ones played like they had to. Just for a little while.

“We didn’t play our best game. A lot of times when you’re playing a team that’s down like West Blocton is right now, it’s hard to self-motivate and that’s something we have to learn to do because, down the road, playing the teams that we have to play, if we want to be successful, we’re going to have to improve a lot no matter who you play.”

The Eagles’ easy win was also highlighted by a second quarter in which Calera held the Tigers to only two points, in addition to a 12-0 Eagles run to begin the second half.

Gayden grabbed four rebounds and made two steals as Tia McCarter registered three steals. Caldwell collected two steals in the winning effort.

Brooklyn Woods scored seven points as West Blocton fell to 3-14 overall and 0-3 in Area 4.
