ALABASTER — The Thompson Warriors wrestling team continued its quest for another state championship, taking down the Hewitt-Trussville Huskies 45-18 Jan. 14.

The match started out with Thompson’s Luke Hester squaring off with Hewitt-Trussville’s Arnoree Sanders in a 195-pound weight class matchup. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Sanders got the upper hand and pinned Sanders to give the Huskies six points.

Thompson won the next two rounds by forfeit, as Keelan Allman nabbed the 220-pound weight class and T.J. Rayam took home the 285-pound class. The Warriors also grabbed the 106-pound class when Dom Latona pinned HTHS’s Matthew Parker to net six more points for the home team.

Arguably the battle of the night took place in the 113-pound weight class, as Thompson’s Cody Mealer stepped on to the mat to take on defending state champion Heath Williamson. Mealer and Williamson grappled back and forth all three rounds, with neither giving an inch. In the end, Mealer was able to pull the upset, knocking off Williamson by decision, 3-2.

In the 120-pound weight class, Hewtt-Trussville’s Hunter Shoop took down Austin Akins in a decision, while Hunter Lacey won the 126-pound class for the Warriors with a decision over David Bowick.

Thompson’s Jaden Hunter captured the 132-pound class with a technical fall win over Reece Argo, and Conner Gilson took a decision win in the 138-pound class. Brewer Gilliland added six points to Thompson’s score with a pin over Hewitt-Trussville’s Dalton Meadows to take home the 145-pound class.

The Huskies took home the 152 and 160-pound weight classes when Davis Perry won by decision over Trey Watson, and Fred Denson pinned Brett Whitley. Thompson didn’t lose another contest, as Luke Moore won a decision over Nathaniel Campbell to take the 170-pound class, and Nick Mobley took home the final match of the night with a major decision over Matthew DeHart in the 185-pound weight class.

With Mobley’s victory, the Warriors sealed the 45-18 dual win over the Huskies. The Warriors move to their next home match, which will be Jan. 16 against Vestavia.
