Whether or not you think resolutions are cliché, the New Year is an ideal time to commit to being the best version of yourself possible.

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Statistics show that 45 percent of Americans did, and weight loss was the most popular resolution.

It makes sense. The holidays are winding down, and during that most wonderful time of the year, we tend to eat, drink and be merry. There’s no better time to promise to begin an exercise routine than the moment you realize that your skinny jeans are suddenly making a muffin top that is not sweet. However, the reality is that 24 percent of Americans making resolutions will never succeed.

So what’s a well-intentioned person to do? Personally, I love the idea of making exercise seem easier, more fun and effective. Group cardio classes are a great way to set a workout schedule, hold yourself accountable, and meet new friends and motivators.

That’s exactly what Calera Dance Academy owner, Kerrie Parker, had in mind when she decided to offer Zumba Fitness classes.

“Everyone is looking to get fit, and it’s a great time to get started,” Parker said. “Zumba is a low impact, great cardio workout. The best part is that it doesn’t feel like work, it feels like a party. You’re dancing the whole time.”

The classes are taught by certified Zumba instructor, April Wilson.

“Zumba is a workout driven by music,” Wilson said. “It combines cardio and muscle toning for a full body workout that is suitable for all fitness levels. You don’t even have to know how to dance, just move your body and follow me!”

Zumba Fitness classes are being offered on Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 5 p.m., and Saturdays at 10 a.m. for $5 each. For more information, contact Calera Dance Academy at 205-668-7775.
