A group of local teenagers soon will have a more direct say in Alabaster’s youth offerings, and will develop civic leadership experience through the city’s first Teen Council.

The city began accepting applications for the Teen Council on Feb. 3, and will accept them through Feb. 28 before working to seat the 12-member council in late March or early April, said Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon.

“We hope to have representation from Thompson (High School), Kingwood, Evangel and local homeschools. We want everyone to be represented,” Handlon said. “They will be able to develop relationships with city leaders. It will give them an opportunity to develop as possible civic leaders.”

The council will be open to Alabaster teens in grades nine-11, and likely will meet about two times per month, Handlon said.

Once seated, the council likely will form three committees: A government liaison committee to work with the Alabaster City Council, a community service group to plan and implement civic projects and a recreation committee to help plan teen-friendly events.

Alabaster City Council members and other civic leaders have agreed to serve as mentors to the kids selected to be on the Teen Council.

Handlon said the Alabaster Sports and Entertainment Foundation, which operates the city’s concession stands, has agreed to help the Teen Council with fundraising, and said the Alabaster YMCA has offered meeting and event space.

“If you really believe this city needs something for teens, this is your opportunity to get involved and make it happen,” Handlon said. “The opportunities are just wide open. I’m really excited about it.”

Applicants must submit a reference letter from a teacher, principal, activity director or work supervisor and a short essay defining leadership and outlining the traits they would bring to the Teen Council.
