MONTEVALLO — It took all of regulation and most of overtime, but the Gold Side Lions eked out a 32-27 victory over the Purple Side Cows in the annual College Night women’s basketball game in an absolute shootout.

The Purple Side jumped out to an early lead, as Tiffany Roseman reeled off a bucket and two free throws to put PV ahead, 4-0.

The Golds responded with three made free throws from Maegan McDaniel and a 3-pointer from Kendall Prater to put the Lions on a 6-0 run and gave them a 6-4 lead.

Tied 6-6, Gold Side went up by two on a made free throw apiece from Katie Strickland and Kellie Rogers, but Purple answered right back on a 3-pointer by Lakeyia Conner and a free throw by Tiffany Ashworth to take a 10-8 lead midway through the first half.

McDaniel tied the game with a basket before Purple Sides’ Gabrielle Pringle sank two free throws to give PV a 12-10 lead late in the half. With time winding down, Prater took a deep shot, sinking a three to give the Golds a 13-12 advantage at the half.

McDaniel added the first score of the half before the Cows came alive, as Jade Lee, Ashton Kupferburg and Elizabeth Bygrave all combined for a 6-0 run to put the Purples up 18-15. The Golds’ shooting went cold, as the squad went the better part of the quarter scoreless.

Late in the half, two free throws from Kimberly Allen seemed to seal it for the Purple Side at 20-16. With seconds ticking away, Jana Armstrong injected life into the Gold Side offense with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to close the lead to 20-19.

Following a technical foul, Prater sank two free throws to put the Golds up 21-20 with 34 seconds left.

Four seconds later, Pringle sank a huge free throw to tie the game and keep the Purples’ hopes as the game went into a five-minute overtime period.

Pringle again took charge, nailing the first bucket to the Cows a 23-21 lead. Kailey Goodwin answered with a huge 3-pointer for the Golds, putting them up 24-23. The squads battled back and forth before Roseman’s follow-up free throws gave a one point lead back to the Purples with 38.5 seconds remaining. Prater followed with two from the charity line, as did Armstrong to put the Lions up 30-27 with just seconds remaining.

The clock ran out as Goodwin sank a basket to give the Golds a 32-27 win.

Prater and McDaniel led the Golds with seven points, while Pringle paced the Purples with seven as well.
