Mary Christine Gallups, 85, passed away on the morning of Jan. 23, 2014.  Born to James Washington and Edna Marie Lackey.  Married July 4, 1947, to Hubert Morris Gallups.  She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and Christian servant of Jehovah.  She was baptized on July 11, 1975, at Huntsville, Von Braun Civic Center, and remained faithful to Jehovah until her death.

Our mom was truly protective of her family, just like a mother hen watching over her young. She was forever calling to see if we were okay, encouraging us to always be careful and to be sure to call her when we got home. She loved us all very much.

She was quick to give advice, and even though there were times that we didn’t want to hear it, it never failed, she was always right.

She was the hardest working person I ever knew, living on a farm from 18 years old until her death.  I’ve seen her at the other end of a crosscut saw with my daddy many times. Our mother and daddy worked hard planting and picking cotton from dawn to dusk and like most farmers barely breaking even.

One of her favorite sayings was, “I did not raise lazy kids.” She was very proud of us. She was always at the window to see Randy go down the road on the tractor. She loved watching cows and was always alert to see new baby calves born in the spring, so she could call Randy and tell him. Some of my favorite memories are in the ministry with my mother.

She is survived by her two children, Jacquelyn Elaine Hosmer and Randy Kenneth Gallups of Harpersville; four grandchildren, Brandie Orgill, Shane Gallups, Jamie Kent and Jessica Matherson; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Dylan McElroy and Aliannah Grace Matherson; three sisters, Ann Knobloch of Pell City, Peggy O’Brien of Wayne, Pa. and June Baker of Harpersville; four brothers, Tom Lackey of Pell City, Don Lackey of Jasper, Gary Lackey of Pell City and Carl Lackey of Kansas.
