County girls basketball update: area tournament edition

Several county girls basketball teams competed in their respective AHSAA area basketball tournaments, held from Feb. 4-10. They are as follows:

WESTMINSTER-OAK MOUNTAIN

The Westminster-Oak Mountain Knights took on Winterboro in the opening round of the Class 1A, Area 7 tournament. Unfortunately for the Knights, the Bulldogs ran away with the event, 99-27.

VINCENT

The Vincent Yellow Jackets girls basketball team fared well in the opening round of the four-team Area 13 tournament, disposing of the Holy Family Cristo Rey Tornadoes, 47-19. From there, the Jackets took on Fultondale in the Area 13 Tourney finals, where the Wildcats took down Vincent 32-20. Vincent now moves on to face Cold Spring on the roads Feb. 13 in a sub-regional matchup.

MONTEVALLO

The Montevallo Bulldogs stumbled in the opener of the Class 3A, Area 8 tournament, falling to the Tarrant Tornadoes, 40-31. With the loss, the Bulldogs are eliminated from playoff contention.

CALERA

The Eagles opened the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament with a blowout win over the West Blocton Tigers, 47-13. With the win, the Eagles turned to face the Bibb County Choctaws. Calera handled Bibb County, notching a 49-29 win to take the area title. With the win, the Eagles now move on to host Corner in the sub-regionals.

SHELBY COUNTY

The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker in the opening round of the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament to Talladega, 46-44.

BRIARWOOD

The Lions fell in the opening round of the Class 5A, Area 9 tourney to Ramsay. The Rams took down BCS, 38-17.

CHELSEA

The Hornets fell in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament to Spain Park, 60-12.

OAK MOUNTAIN

The Eagles opened up the Class 6A, Area 8 tourney with a 45-23 win over Pelham. From there, the Eagles took on Spain Park, where they fell to the Jaguars, 52-36. Oak Mountain now moves on to face Thompson in a sub-regional matchup on Feb. 13.

THOMPSON

The Warriors took on all comers in the Area 7 tournament, besting Stanhope Elmore in the opener, 68-49. In the championship round the Warriors squared off with the Wetumpka Indians. In the end, Thompson walked away with the area championship, taking down the Indians 41-34. The Warriors move on to host Oak Mountain in the sub-regional.

PELHAM

The Panthers fell in the opening round of the Area 8 tournament to Oak Mountain.

SPAIN PARK

The Jaguars dominated the competition on the way to the Class 6A, Area 8 title. After disposing of Chelsea in the opening round, the Jaguars took on rival Oak Mountain. With the 52-36 win, Spain Park laid claim to the Area 8 title, and will face Wetumpka at home in sub-regional play.
