The Shelby County, Hoover and Alabaster school systems will be closed all day on Thursday, Feb. 12.

Shelby County has remained under a winter storm warning since Feb. 11.

“Based on reports from the National Weather Service, our EMA and Sheriff’s Office, overnight temperatures and road conditions, especially in outlying areas of the county, will make travel difficult and unsafe in the morning,” read an email from Shelby County Schools. “Schools will resume normal hours on Friday.”

Reports from the National Weather Service predict snowfall in the Birmingham metropolitan area through about midnight on Feb. 12 and possible hazardous road conditions until temperatures rise on Feb. 13.

“This isn’t the decision we wanted to make, but we want to do what is in the best interest of our children,” Alabaster School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers said on Feb. 12. “We apologize to the parents for the late notice, but we had to make a call using the information we had available to us.”
