MONTEVALLO—The Montevallo City Council unanimously approved an ordinance confirming acceptance of a two phase paving plan during their meeting Monday, Feb. 24.

Phase I includes 25 streets of varying lengths, at an approximate cost of over $730,000. The funds for the project will be taken from the $1.5 million set aside by the city to be used for paving purposes.

Shelby County Road 203 was originally listed as part of Phase I, but Councilman Don Hughes decided to hold the road to Phase II in order to make sure the road is the city’s responsibility.

“We don’t want to pave something that isn’t our road,” Hughes said. “I want to look at more documentation. We can shift Shelby County Road 203 to phase II. That will give me another year to see what’s going on.”

Phase II, which is slated to begin in March of 2015, currently includes seven roads and a proposed sidewalk project on King’s Street. However, the City Council will review and add roads as necessary in the coming year, Mayor Hollie Cost said.
