MONTEVALLO—The Montevallo Chamber of Commerce and the University of Montevallo Environmental Club are co-hosting the third annual Electronic Recycling Day Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We can recycle about anything that plugs in except a television,” Chamber of Commerce executive director Steve Gilbert said.

Items that can be recycled include computer components, keyboards and mice, cables and wiring, power supplies, printers and fax machines and many more.

In the past three years, the partnership has helped Montevallo citizens recycle over three and a half tons—about 6,000 pounds—of electronics, Gilbert said.

Gilbert first decided to host a day devoted to recycling electronics after spending over two decades in the electronics and communications industry.

“I accumulated a lot of electronics, and they are not landfill friendly,” Gilbert said. “An old computer contains lead and a lot of heavy precious metals that are just not environmentally friendly.”

Though March 15 is the official date of the recycling event, Homeland Computer Systems, Inc., located at 968 Main Street, will accept items from now until March 15.

All recycling is free except computer monitors, which are $7 per monitor and secure hard drive destruction, which is $10 per hard drive.
