Children of full-time city of Alabaster employees will be allowed to enroll in the Alabaster City School System beginning with the 2014-2015 school year after the city’s Board of Education approved the matter during a Feb. 26 meeting.

During the meeting, the School Board voted unanimously to allow children of full-time Alabaster municipal employees to enroll in the city’s school system.

The move will only apply to full-time Alabaster municipal government employees.

City School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers said the idea to open enrollment to city employees came after a recent School Board retreat.

“We already have a system in place to allow Alabaster (School) Board employees to send their children to Alabaster schools, so this is an extension of that,” Vickers said.

School Board member Derek Henderson called the plan a “great move.”

After the meeting, Vickers said he was unsure how many new students would be added next year as a result of allowing children of city employees, but he said it likely will not be a significant number.
