Students likely will see no changes in the school calendar during the Pelham school system’s first year of operation, the city’s interim school superintendent said during a Feb. 27 town hall meeting.

Pelham Interim School Superintendent Dr. Tim Alford said the city’s Board of Education is set to vote on a calendar for the 2014-2015 school year during its March 10 meeting.

“I will make a recommendation to the Board of Education to adopt a school calendar which mirrors that of the county,” Alford said, noting some Pelham students may still be using Shelby County Schools services, such as the School of Technology, after Pelham forms its own school system.

Pelham School Board members are working to finalize the city’s split from the Shelby County School System by July 1.

“The prudent thing to do would be to mirror the county’s calendar this first year,” Alford said, noting the city’s School Board will form its own school calendar beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. “I don’t think we need to make a drastic departure from the county’s calendar in this transition year.”
