CHELSEA — The Thompson Warriors baseball team began a two game win streak in one day, as the squad took both games of a doubleheader March 5.

In the opener, the Hornets held the Warriors to a single run through the first three frames until Thompson exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. THS tacked on four more in the top of the fifth to take a 10-win courtesy of mercy rule.

On the mound, Hunter Rigney, Peyton Johnson and Drew Avans threw a combined one-hitter, surrendered by Johnson. Johnson earned the win, as he and Rigney tossed a strikeout apiece.

Avans paced Thompson at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. He was joined by Hunter Black and Jake Walters who each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored apiece.

In the nightcap, the Hornets got on the board first when A.J. Jones scored on a Green sac fly to put the host squad up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Thompson answered in the top of the second when Durrett crossed the plate on a Collin Lillie single after walking to start the inning. The score stayed knotted up until the Warriors inched ahead in the top of the fourth. Jake Toxey singled to start the inning with a single to center and Avans reached second on a throwing error, moving Toxey to third. The duo scored on a single by Collin Lillie, and Lillie scored on a Jackson Cofer double to right to give Thompson a 4-1 lead after four.

After Adam Durrett scored to give THS a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth, Chelsea launched on an offensive attack. Blackburn scored on a Tanner Master’s single, as Jones came across following a bases loaded walk of Calhoun. With the go ahead run on first, Chelsea’s Adam Holliday struck out looking to end the rally.

The Warriors added two more in the sixth when Lillie and Cofer scored on a wild pitch and throw, respectively to make it 7-3 Thompson.

It was all either team scored the rest of the contest as the Warriors took the win.

“We played well as a team,” Thompson head coach Pat Hamrick said. “We had a lot of energy, and (pitching-wise) we were trying to get ready for our Mississippi (tournament). We had a couple of guys the second game that threw for the first time, and threw really well.”

The Warriors move on to take on Wetumpka March 14, while Chelsea faces Vestavia March 13.
