The second annual Vincent Yellow Jacket 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run took place on a cool, breezeless morning March 8.  The event was staged by the Vincent Middle High PTO and raised nearly $3,000 to fund scholarships and support instruction.

“We’ve had absolutely perfect weather last year and this year,” said VMHS Principal Joel Dixon.  “The community support of this event grows every year.”

PTO president Tammy Hutchins said she agreed with Dixon’s assessment.

“This is a great event all the way around,” she said. “In addition to raising money to help teachers do their jobs and to be able to award a couple of scholarships to departing seniors, it’s good to see so many students, teachers and parents engaging in a healthy, active event.  In a time where we are all increasingly sedentary, it’s a great community event for everyone and reinforces healthy lifestyles.”

According to Dixon, the run had eighty-three registered runners, a modest increase over the first year.

“We look forward to seeing this event grow year after year,” he said.

This year, there was a notable increase in participation among alumni.  Dixon said he attributed this to healthy bantering and daring over Facebook.

“A few alums started kicking it around with others,” he said. “I think it was one part race, one part reunion. (It was a) great morning and it means so much to have their support.”

Shannon Jacobs, a Vincent alum, was this year’s winner with a time of 19 minutes and 22 seconds.

“Even though I’ve moved away, it is always nice to come home to Vincent because it reminds me of how wonderful it was to grow up in such a caring community,” he said. “I love to run, and of course, it was fun to win the 5K. I really enjoyed seeing all of the students who ran the race and others who volunteered, and the alumni and teachers who participated. We are all so proud of our alma mater and this event was a great way to show our support.”

Dixon summed up the day by thanking the community support the event received.

“Our kids, our parents and our alumni are so willing to give back and to serve.  It’s one of the many reasons I’m honored to work in this community.”
