OMHS win Varsity Scholars’ Bowl Championship

PELHAM – Varsity Scholars’ Bowl students from Pelham High School and Oak Mountain High School faced off prior to the Shelby County Board of Education meeting on Feb. 20 to determine the winner of the Varsity Scholars’ Bowl Competition, with Oak Mountain emerging as the county champions.

The two teams competed in the countywide Scholars’ Bowl competition on Feb. 5 to determine their top two places for the final. Chelsea High School’s varsity team finished in third place at the county competition.

Matt Tindal was the first place individual high scorer in the varsity team competition, with Wally Morris from Shelby County High School finishing second and Grant Beard from Pelham High School finishing third. Additional individual high scorers in the varsity competition included Preston Waid and Skylar Hendrix (tie) of Calera High School; Marwa Elgazzar, Tate Pollock and Dal Welsh (tied) of Chelsea High School; Kenny Oswald of Montevallo High School; and Davis Whitfield of Vincent High School.

Oak Mountain High School took top honors for the B-team competition. Chelsea High School finished in second place and Shelby County High School finished in third place.

Jack Christiansen from Oak Mountain High School was the first place individual high scorer for B-team competition. Daniel Creekmore from Shelby County High School was the second place individual high scorer, while Richard Taylor from Pelham High and Josh Silas from Chelsea High School tied for third.

Additional individual high scorers in B-team competition included Jacob Goldberg of Calera High School; Sam Reece of Montevallo High School; and Hannah Crowder of Vincent High School.

Eighth grade team winners were Columbiana Middle School, first place; Oak Mountain Middle School, second place; and Chelsea Middle School, third place. Individual high scorers included, of Calera Middle School, Kobee Toyer; Chelsea Middle School, Nick Hunter; Columbiana Middle School, Cole Jeffries; Helena Middle School, Josh Daughtry; Montevallo Middle School, Grace Stermer; Oak Mountain Middle School, Cole Sullivan; Riverchase Middle School, Alesia Hulcher; and Vincent Middle School, Brock Sanders. Individual honors went to Cole Sullivan of Oak Mountain Middle (first place individual high scorer); Adam Pendry of Oak Mountain Middle (second place individual high scorer); Nick Hunter of Chelsea Middle School (third place individual high scorer, tied) and Cole Jefferies (third place individual high scorer, tied).

Seventh grade team winners were Oak Mountain Middle School, first place; Columbiana Middle School, second place; and Helena Middle, third place. Individual high scorers included, of Calera Middle School, Matthew Rousey; Chelsea Middle School, Hunter Thompson; Columbiana Middle School, Billy Fryer; Helena Middle, Will Hernandez and Justin Ritondo (tied); Montevallo Middle School, Leah Waites; Oak Mountain Middle School, Nick McDuff; Riverchase Middle School, Louie Smith and Vincent Middle School, Logan Clayton. Individual honors went to Billy Fryer of Columbiana Middle (first place individual high scorer); Nick McDuff of Oak Mountain Middle (second place individual high scorer); Will Hernandez of Helena Middle School (third place individual high scorer, tied), Justin Ritondo of Helena Middle (third place individual high scorer, tied) and Louie Smith of Riverchase Middle (third place individual high scorer, tied).

Sixth grade team winners were Oak Mountain Middle School, first place; Montevallo Middle School, second place; and Columbiana Middle, third place. Individual high scorers included, of Calera Middle School, Rankin Allen; Columbiana Middle School, Rachael Reeves; Helena Middle School, Thomas Adair; Montevallo Middle School, Grayson Fulmer; Oak Mountain Middle School, Elizabeth Camp; Riverchase Middle School, Kylie Snyder; and Vincent Middle School, Paisely Armstrong. Individual honors went to Grayson Fulmer (first place individual high scorer); Elizabeth Camp of Oak Mountain Middle (second place individual high scorer, tied); Rankin Allen of Calera Middle School (second place individual high scorer, tied); Rachel Reeves of Columbiana Middle School (third place individual high scorer, tied); and Justin Ritondo of Helena Middle (third place individual high scorer, tied).
