CALERA—Double Tap Training Grounds, a training facility, which opened in late February in Calera, is holding a sniper challenge May 9 through 10.

The competition will have two divisions, one for law enforcement and military, and an open division for any skill level.

Robert Goodner, event organizer and facilitator, said the goals of the competition are two-fold.

“We want to let them exercise in a controlled setting, and put their skills to the test,” he said. “(Military and law enforcement) takes dedication, commitment and tremendous awareness, and we want to celebrate those skills and provide this form of recreation for their work and commitment.”

So far there are 15 shooters registered with groups coming from as far as Maryland, MD., Goodner said, and he hopes for 40 to 50 shooters total.

The competition will include 10 stations, which vary in distance and elevation. The shooters will take a predetermined number of shots at each target, and will be graded on shots, hits versus misses and time to negotiate, Goodner said.

There will be prizes for the winners, and trophies for the top three competitors in the military division.
