Become an informed voter

Over the next several weeks, we all have a chance to become better informed as we head into the midst of a very busy political season.

As voters, we have an obligation to learn as much as we can about each candidate who is seeking to represent us on the county, state or national level. The decisions we make this year will have lasing impacts on the future of Shelby County, Alabama and the United States, and these are decisions we shouldn’t take lightly.

In May, the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, Shelby County Newspapers and the Shelby County Republican Party will partner to host five forums featuring a wide range of candidates for several offices.

The following are dates, times and locations for each forum:

-Tuesday, May 6 – State House District 73 (5:30-7 p.m.) at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena

-Thursday, May 8 – U.S. Congressional 6th District (5:30-7:30 p.m.) at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center off U.S. 280

-Tuesday, May 20 – State Senate District 11 (5:30-7 p.m.) at the Shelby County High School Auditorium. The South Shelby Chamber of Commerce is also co-hosting this Forum

-Wednesday, May 21 – Shelby County Sheriff’s Forum (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena

-Thursday, May 22 – State House District 43 (5:30-7:30 p.m.) at New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church off Alabama 119.

During the forum, each candidate in attendance will answer a slew of questions designed to demonstrate their stance on issues important to Shelby County.

Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar, as well-informed voters serve as the benchmark of our nation’s system of government. It’s our duty to make our voices heard and hold accountable those we elect to represent us on any level of government or public service.
