Alabaster School Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers said he expects confirmation soon on a more than $100 million bond issue aimed at funding a new high school, a new athletic complex and upgrades to the city’s school buildings.

During an April 9 Alabaster Board of Education work session, Vickers said he was awaiting word from the Frazer Lanier investment company on confirmation of the bond issue, and said he was planning to meet with Frazer Lanier and Alabama Department of Education representatives on April 10.

“So far, we are matching up with their expectations for approval. We’ve got everything moving in that direction,” Vickers said.

During an April 10 phone call, Vickers said the school system was still awaiting approval of the bond issue.

The Alabaster City School System is planning to use the bond money to fund the construction of a 330,000-square-foot new high school and athletic facilities and renovations to the current Thompson High School and Thompson Intermediate School buildings.

Alabaster City Schools officials have not yet determined a location for the new high school and athletic complex.

“That is the beauty of a city school system. You see your tax dollars working for your kids,” Vickers said. “We feel like its our students’ time to get that new school and those facility upgrades.

“It’s good to see those dollars going into tangible things,” Vickers added. “When you build a high school, you’re impacting a century.”
