“I am married to Barry Woods and have lived in the Shelby County area for nearly 30 years. I came from Opelika to the University of Montevallo, but being young and in love can surely change your direction. After meeting Barry at Shelby Baptist Church, getting married and having a family turned into ‘my major’,” said LeiAnne Woods.

Now, LeiAnne and Barry’s children are Courtney, 28 years old, Cara, 24, and Caitlin 19. With the older two married, there are hopes for lots of grandbabies (maybe even some boys!)

Woods and her family attend First Baptist Church of Alabaster. Reading, all kinds of crafts and do-it-yourself projects are among her current interests and hobbies.

A recent beach trip, including her sons-in-law and other family members, was a very fun-filled experience and a great time was had by all. As a couple, the Woods have their heart set on an Italian adventure at some point in the future.

After several different jobs, Woods began as a substitute teacher and then became full-time as a support person.

“The best part of my job is working as a vessel of knowledge, help and love for my students,” she said. “It totally makes my day when a child breaks through and has his a-ha moment…..I get it. That’s my reward too.”

She has been a paraprofessional at Thompson Intermediate School for some 13 years. The school is not only close to her home but also very close to her heart. Being chosen as Support Person of the Year was an honor that was voted on by both staff and teachers and is well deserved by this hard working and dedicated individual.

Much is accomplished on a daily basis by teacher and paraprofessional working together to cover the given subject and reach each child.
