Martha Rae Nelson Smith, age 70, a long time resident of Pelham, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014. Martha was a native of Pensacola, Fla. She was known for her devotion to God and her family.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Smitty” Smith; parents, W. C. and Cora M. Nelson; sister, Virginia Spears; and brother, David Nelson.

Her survivors include her daughter, Dawn Smith; granddaughter, Hannah Smith; great-granddaughter, Gracie Smith; great-grandson, Noah Dupont; sisters, Celeste Spears (Herschell); brother, Donald Nelson (Jeanette); “son,” Wayne Hawotte; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.

A memorial service will be April 24 at Oak Mountain Independent Church at 11 a.m. Charter Funeral Home.
