A 37-year-old Alabaster man remains in the Shelby County Jail on child molestation charges, and a grand jury is scheduled to decide during an upcoming session if it will uphold the charges against him, according to Shelby County District Court documents.

The Alabaster Police Department arrested Roberto Villalobos Grimaldo in August 2013 and charged him with one felony count of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12 after the victim’s mother reported her child had been molested by the suspect.

Grimaldo lists an address on Simmsville Road in Alabaster.

According to court documents, Grimaldo’s charge was bound over to a grand jury in November 2013. The grand jury will review the case at “its next available session,” according to court documents.

The grand jury will review the details of the case and decide whether or not it will uphold the charges against the suspect. As of May 1, the grand jury had not returned an indictment against Grimaldo.

According to Alabama law, a person “commits the crime of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old if he or she, being 16 years old or older, subjects another person who is less than 12 years old to sexual contact.”

Sexual abuse of a child younger than 12 is a Class B felony. If convicted of the crime Grimaldo could face between two and 20 years in prison.
