For the Westminster School at Oak Mountain, the playoff season has seen both peaks and valleys. While the boys soccer team fell to Indian Springs in the second round of AHSAA playoffs April 30, the girls track and field team captured its second straight AHSAA Class 1A championship May 3.

In a game that featured strong defense and clean, physical play, two of Shelby County’s soccer powerhouses squared off for the right to advance to the third round of the AHSAA Class 1A-4A playoffs.

While both teams played stellar defense, it was Indian Springs who converted one more chance than Westminster-Oak Mountain, taking a 2-1 win.

The scoring came early in the match, as Jeffrey Simonetti put a shot in to put ISS up 1-0 at the 36:35 mark.

Westminster responded quickly, as John Fitzgerald headed a ball into the goal to tie the game at 1-1 with 30:32 left in the half.

From there, both teams played tough defense, ending the half tied at 1.

In the second half, Indian Springs turned up the offensive pressure. It paid off with 25:15 to go, as ISS notched a second goal when Jeffrey Simonetti put a shot in the back of the goal.

The two teams swapped chances for the rest of the game, but neither found a score, as Indian Springs took the win and the right to advance in the playoffs.

While the soccer team’s strong effort came up short, the girls track team came up with a second-straight AHSAA 1A state title at the state meet in Selma. The team finished with 120.50 points, and Katie Brooks Boone tallied 40 total points to lead all 1A girls participants.

Boone took home the 100-meter dash, as well as the 200, 300 and 400 events. Maddie Hoaglund captured the 3,200 and 1,600 meter events.
The boys team came home third in 1A, with Jacob Carrell taking a win in the 800.
