UM baseball headed to PBC tournament

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team, the No. 7 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, will face No. 2 seed Columbus State University in the quarterfinals Saturday, May 10 at Roberto Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, S.C, after the Falcons clinched their third consecutive berth in the conference tournament.

First pitch is set for 8:30 p.m. Eastern/7:30 Central.

The winner of the Montevallo-Columbus State contest will move on to face the winner of the game featuring No. 3 seed USC Aiken and No. 6 seed Armstrong in the semifinals Sunday, May 11.

The tournament is an eight-team single elimination tournament, with quarterfinal contests Saturday May 10 followed by semifinals and the championship game Sunday, May 11.

Daily adult tickets are $5 each, with senior citizens and children 12-and-under admitted for $3 each. Tournament passes for admission to all games will be available for $8 each. Students from any Peach Belt Conference school will be admitted free with a valid student ID. There will be no complimentary tickets or other free passes for the Peach Belt Tournament.

The Falcons (29-20) clinched the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament after finishing with a 12-16 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. The Cougars (36-14) earned the No. 2 seed after registering a 23-7 record in conference play.

Columbus State is ranked in several national polls, including a No. 10 ranking in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II poll.

The Cougars took two-of-three games against the Falcons during the regular season. Montevallo dropped the series opener 12-1 before bouncing back with a 10-4 win over Columbus State in the second game of the series. The Cougars clinched the series with a 7-6 win over the Falcons in the rubber match.

The two teams are meeting in the conference tournament for the second consecutive season. Last season, Montevallo fell to Columbus State 15-2 in the conference tournament before responding with a 10-4 win over the Cougars in an elimination game, which sent the Falcons to the championship game for the first time in program history.

Columbus State owns a 23-13 all-time series lead over Montevallo.

Montevallo enters the Peach Belt Conference tournament third in the conference with a .424 on-base percentage. The Falcons are also fifth in the conference with 344 RBIs and are sixth in the conference with a .312 batting average.
