CHELSEA — A groundbreaking ceremony for the city of Chelsea’s community recreation and senior center is set for May 20 at 5 p.m., prior to the Chelsea City Council’s regular meeting set for 6 p.m. at Chelsea City Hall.

The 29,000-square-foot center will be built across from Liberty Baptist Church. In a previous report, Mayor Earl Niven said he expects construction to last for about a year, or 360 days, despite the contractor’s “aggressive” 150-day construction schedule.

The Chelsea City Council in March awarded the bid for construction of the center to Birmingham-based Argo Building Co. Argo Building submitted the lowest bid at $3,684,121.
