The Oak Mountain High School football squad celebrated a collective Mother’s Day May 10, as members of the team hosted their moms to a clinic on football.  The mothers learned about equipment, positions on the field, strategy and were able to run through warm-ups and drills with their sons.

The first part of the morning took place in the “classroom.”  The mothers heard from several of the coaches and two guest speakers: the head referee from a local organization and Jim Dunaway, sports reporter and radio talk show host.

After the class time, the moms were given the chance to show what they learned in the classroom. The original plan was to have each mother head out to the practice field to work through warm ups and drills with the players, but rain in the area kept everyone in the gym.

The moms gained a new appreciation for the coaches and players as they walked alongside them through the team’s daily routine.  If the son was a quarterback, the mom learned the techniques of the quarterback.  If the son was a defensive end, their mom learned stance and the swim move.

The event finished with the group having lunch together.
