PELHAM—Pelham will have a first class fireworks show to celebrate the Fourth of July this year as the City Council passed a resolution allowing for a $10,000 agreement with Pyro Productions, Inc. during a May 19 City Council meeting.

“It’s the extreme, it’s a good long show,” Mayor Gary Waters said of the fireworks display during a May 12 City Council work session.

Pyro Productions, Inc. has put on fireworks shows and received recommendations from groups such as the Birmingham Barons, Lakeside Baptist Church and the State Legislative Leaders Foundation.

The fireworks display will be part of a larger Independence Day celebration at Oak Mountain State Park on July 3, consisting of “food, beverage and entertainment,” Waters said.

This is just one of several city initiatives focused on bringing the community together. Pelham will also celebrate its 50th anniversary with a city-wide Golden Jubilee on July 11 and 12 at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. The free event will feature food, shopping and music.

“I think this is a great step,” City Councilman Ron Scott said. “This is in response… (to what) many citizens have reached out to us for.”

“We’re just trying to do what the community is asking for,” City Council President Rick Hayes added.

The Pelham City Council also approved two resolutions allowing Summer Classics additional financing for renovations to the old Moore-Handley building on Pelham Parkway. According to company President and CEO Bew White, Summer Classics will invest nearly $2 million in upgrades to what will become the company’s headquarters and flagship store.

“Now (the building) is something that is beginning to develop and shape itself into something we’re really going to be proud of,” Scott said.
