The Alabaster Police Department will be teaching local women and teens to protect themselves against dangers such as assault and rape during a series of self defense classes this summer.

Two of the department’s officers – John Kessler and Jamison Lee – are certified “rape aggression defense” instructors, and will lead the classes, which will be held throughout June and July.

The classes are open to local females ages 13 and older.

“All classes will have both highly trained and experienced officers to ensure that each individual class participant receives the maximum benefit from their training experience,” read an APD press release. “We are offering an array of different times in order to accommodate the maximum amount of people.”

To complete the class, participants must take a total of nine hours of training time – either in a single class or over multiple classes.

“We have divided the classes into three-hour/three-day training, and also have several nine-hour/one-day classes,” read the release. “Remember that we have limited amounts of space for participants, so if you sign up please do your best to make the training so that another participant does not miss out on this training.”

Police said the classes are expected to fill up quickly, and are encouraging participants to sign up early. All classes will be held in the Thompson High School cafeteria, which is on the back of the school building.
