PELHAM—Valley Elementary School celebrated the end of the school year with their annual field day on May 9.

Although a rainy and gray day, the weather did “not dampen the enthusiasm of the students,” who participated in a number of outdoor activities setup by the Physical Education Department, VES computer teacher Donna Scelsi said.

Each class rotated through the various activities, such as scoops, soccer shot, distance throw, kick off, space bounce, sponge relay, bucket brigade, bowling and scooters, giving each student the chance to do each activity,” Scelsi said. Students were also treated to popsicles.

This year, the second grade got a special surprise. As the winners of the year-long Box Tops for Education collection contest, they got to dunk VES Principal Linda Campanotta and Vice Principal John Vincent in a dunk tank.

“We collect Box Tops for Education throughout the year,” Scelsi said. “Whichever grade level brought in the most box tops got to dunk Principal Campanotta and Vice Principal Vincent.”

As a whole, VES collected more than 8,000 box tops, 4,070 of which came from the second grade alone.

“They love field day,” Scelsi said. “It’s the highlight of the year.”
