Betty Jean Grant

Calera

Betty Jean Grant, age 85, passed away from this life on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at 11:20 a.m. and has a new address on the door of her mansion in Heaven, just on the right hand of Jesus. She was born on July 23, 1928, in Wetumpka, but grew up in Verbena where she met the “love of her life”, Ottis Grant. They married April 20, 1946, and moved to Siluria, where they both worked at the Siluria Cotton Mill until moving to Calera in 1954. She and her family resided in Calera for 56 years. She continued to live in Calera after her husband passed away in 1993. She was a 22 year employee at the Jr. Food Store in Calera just prior to her retirement at age of 72. She loved southern gospel music and always scanned the newspapers and listened to the Clanton radio station to locate gospel singings, all of which she would attend. She was a resident at Hatley Health Care in Clanton since April 2010 where she loved many friends and really loved her social life-especially playing BINGO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Grant Sr.; parents, Elzie and Alva Patterson; sisters, Eddie Lois Patterson, Gail Morton and Annie Ruth Burks; and grandson, Charles “Tuder” Harris Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Patsy Grant Harris (P’nut) of Florence; two sons, David Randall Grant (Diane) of Trussville and Ottis Grant Jr. (Dee) of Pelham; daughter-in-law, Linda Ingram Grant of Calera; brother, Crayton David Patterson (Jane) of Hoover; sister, Lucille Jones of Clanton; three grandchildren, Russell Shannon Harris (Sarah) of Florence, Kristi Brooks (Ken) of Calera and Lindsey Lemley (Zach) of Tupelo, Miss., and six great-grandchildren, Ches Harris of EL Paso, Texas, Skylar Harris of Trussville, Taylor and Madison Brooks of Calera, Grayson Tucker Lemley of Tupelo, Miss. and Grant Russell Harris of Florence. She was a member of Calera Baptist Church for more than 55 years. Anyone who knew Betty Jean would find her warmth, hospitality and love of her Lord remarkable. She was the consummate wife, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends with whom she shared her life.

Visitation with the family will be May 28 at 1 p.m. at Enon Baptist Church at 4994 Highway 18, Montevallo, AL. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Shelby Memory Gardens. Charter Funeral Home is honored to serve the Grant family.
