ALABASTER—City officials, Shelby County DHR workers and members of the Alabama Department of Senior Services attended a seminar at the Alabaster Senior Center, which focused on elder abuse awareness.

“I want to welcome these people who have come to give you valuable information,” Alabaster Mayor Marty Handlon said.

Shelby County DHR investigates approximately 100 reports of physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exploitation a year, said County Director Kim Mashego.

“We depend very heavily on local support,” Mashego said, citing local police and other entities as invaluable resources for the agency.

Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney attended the event, and told seniors help is only “a phone call away.”

“Anytime you need us, just give us a call,” Rigney said.

Dan Lord, education and public affairs manager for the Alabama Securities Commission, gave seniors tips on protection and monitoring investments, and urged attendees to make sure that both the investment and dealer are registered with the commission.

“No matter what, you need to know what you’re buying,” Lord said. “Check out your financial advisor.”

Robyn James, ADRC specialist, warned seniors against specific scams and advised them to make a prevention plan and share the information with their friends.

“Take your time (with investments) and always share the information with someone you trust,” James said.
