COLUMBIANA—The Shelby County Commission approved a resolution to resurface nearly nine miles of Chelsea Road, between County Road 49 south of Chelsea and State Road 25 in Columbiana, during a June 23 meeting.

The June 23 action was the first step in the process to resurface Chelsea Road, and County Engineer Randy Cole construction is “not imminent.”

“We’re in the very preliminary stages,” Cole said in a June 24 phone interview, noting there are currently no cost or project start date estimates. “It’s a federal aid project, and there’s a lot of paperwork on the front end.”

Federal funding for the resurfacing will come through the Alabama Department of Transportation and Cole said there was “no way to estimate” how long it may take to secure this funding.
