A Pelham man arrested in Douglasville, Ga., on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery is being held in the Douglas, Ga., County Jail without bond.

Dewey Calhoun Green, 23 was arrested on June 25 after allegedly causing an accident which led to the death of Janice Pitts, 53, of Douglasville.

According to Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack, Green exited Interstate 20 and rear-ended the vehicle Pitts was driving. Green allegedly repeatedly “rammed” Pitts’ vehicle. When Pitts got out of her vehicle to survey possible damage, Green allegedly “pinned” her between her vehicle and his truck. Womack said Green then “put his truck in reverse and ran over her backwards,” killing her.

Green appeared in court on June 26 to hear the charges against him. He is facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, both of which carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison, according to the Georgia Criminal Code. He is also facing a felony murder charge, which is punishable by death in Georgia.

According to Douglas County Acting District Attorney Brian Fortner, Green was denied bond in his initial court appearance.

“At the current time, he’s locked up without bond,” Fortner said. “There are some issues in his background that caused some concern.”

Fortner and Chief Assistant District Attorney Ryan Leonard will be prosecuting the case. According to the Douglas County Sentinel newspaper, Green was represented by Douglas County Public Defender Monica Myles during the June 27 court appearance, although Fortner said he believes “that he (Green) has an attorney.”

Fortner said the case is still awaiting the results of a toxicology report take after the June 25 incident.

Green is scheduled for a motion and will appear in court again on July 16, Fortner said.
