ALABASTER—The Alabaster Senior Center offers great fun to Shelby County adults aged 55 and older!

“Our goal here at the senior center is to provide a variety of activities, allowing seniors to have choices and have a place to come and meet new friends,” said Alicia Walters, adult therapeutic senior citizens center manager at the Alabaster Senior Center.

This summer, the center has been busy with various activities ranging from fitness and art classes to educational sessions and outings.

Summer activities are primarily held indoors.

“We take into consideration the weather and other obligations,” Walters said.

One program of the center offers is the Watercolor Workshop. Participants learn to create watercolor works of art.

On June 10, the senior center partnered with M4A to host an Elder Law Session in which seniors discussed and explored elder law.

The center also had their first-ever Donuts with Divas June 30. The ladies enjoyed breakfast together, socialized and played games.

On June 12 seniors took a Walk Down Memory Lane. After bringing past photos of themselves and posting them to a wall, they played a guessing game of “who’s who.”

Coming events include a Refrigerator Beauty class, which will educate attendees on kitchen products that can be used for cosmetic purposes, and dance classes available to seniors regardless of experience.

“We strive to be an independent center or center that has a lot of activities,” said Walters, noting the independence of the adults who attend center activities.

Walters said that the summer goal for the Alabaster Senior Center is “to continue to provide quality programs” for Shelby County seniors.
