Pelham resident Dewey Calhoun Green, 23, is still being held without bond in the Douglas, Ga., County Jail awaiting an August preliminary hearing, Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner confirmed during July 17 phone interview.

Green was arrested on June 25 in Douglasville, Ga., on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery after allegedly killing Janice Pitts, 53, of Douglasville.

According to Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack, Green allegedly hit Pitts’ vehicle repeatedly, “pinned” her between his truck and her vehicle and “put his truck in reverse and ran over her backwards,” resulting in her death.

Green originally appeared in court on June 26 to hear his charges. He was denied bond and is awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 7, although there is a possibility he may appear before the grand jury before that time, Fortner said.

“The investigation is continuing,” Fortner said, adding results from Green’s toxicology report should be returned by the Aug. 7 scheduled hearing, but that date is “not guaranteed.”

Fortner and Chief Assistant District Attorney Ryan Leonard are prosecuting the case. Green is facing charges of aggravated assault and aggravated batter, both of which carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison, according to the Georgia Criminal Code. He is also facing a felony murder charge, which is punishable by death in Georgia.
