PELHAM—Although the Young Adult Summer Reading Program is drawing to a close, the Pelham Public Library is offering several new reading groups for teens as the school year starts.

Introduced this summer, the Young Adult Book Club will continue its meetings throughout the year, Young Adult Librarian Savannah Kitchens said. Each month the club selects and reads a young adult book and then meets at the library for a group discussion.

“We have ready one fantasy and one realistic fiction… we cover a variety of topics,” Kitchens said, explaining books are chosen by a group vote. “We put forth suggestions at the end of each session.”

While the book club focuses on young adult books, membership is not limited to teens.

“It’s open to any person who is interested in young adult literature, it’s a wide age range” Kitchens said, noting the group includes members as young as 13 and even some mothers.

The Anime Club is another of the library’s new teen groups. Open to all anime fans, the group meets weekly at the library to watch their favorite anime series, talk about a weekly topic and participate in a “roundtable discussion of their fan fiction,” Kitchens said.

“They are very self directed,” Kitchens said of the club. The library has sponsored the Anime Club throughout the summer as they work to find a faculty sponsor so they may continue as a school program in the fall.

“Anime Club has been very popular,” Kitchens said, noting the club regularly draws around 15 teens to each weekly meeting. “We are working on and really want to get it going as a school program.”
