ALABASTER – A 31-year-old Columbiana woman is being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $5,000 bond after she and her newborn baby allegedly tested positive for multiple drugs.
The Alabaster Police Department arrested Christina Ann Ashworth, who lists an address in the 300 block of Vantana Drive in Columbiana, on July 23 and charged her with one felony count of chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced.
According to Ashworth’s arrest warrant, “after defendant gave birth to (the) infant victim, both mother and infant tested positive for Percocet and suboxone.” Percocet and suboxone are both opioid painkillers.
Chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced is a Class C felony, according to Alabama law. If convicted Ashworth could face between one and 10 years in prison.
