HOOVER — The 10th Annual Save the Os 5k and One-Mile Fun Run and Silent Auction will take place Aug. 16, from 8 a.m.– noon at Greystone Golf and Country Club.

Susan DuBose, a member of the Save the Os Committee, said the race is open to “anyone and everyone.” The family-friendly event will offer food, swimming and music, as well as an annual belly flop contest.

Many teams will be participating in the race, including that of Coach Kim Evans, Auburn University’s golf coach who will be racing with her team in honor of her ovarian cancer journey.

All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation in order “to help research and find a cure for ovarian cancer,” said DuBose.

The fundraiser was founded in 2004 after the death of Greystone community friend and neighbor Lori Johnson to ovarian cancer. The fundraiser, which honors the memory of Johnson, has “grown and grown ever since,” said DuBose.

In anticipation of a large crowd, an overflow parking area offering shuttle services has been added across from St. Vincent’s One Nineteen.

Last year’s event drew more than 650 participants and raised $40,000, and the Save the Os Committee is hoping for an even greater impact from this year’s race for research.

A pre-race kick-off party at Bellini’s Ristorante and Bar is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Bellini’s will donate a portion of the proceeds from participants’ $15 buffet purchases to the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation.

A silent auction also will be held at both the kick-off party and the race, offering various vacations, meals from Bellini’s catering, jewelry donated by Bromberg’s and Levy’s Fine Jewelers, cycling at Rocket Cycle and spa treatment at Spa Greystone.

Day-of registration opens Aug. 16 at 6:30 a.m. Distribution of various awards and door prizes, as well as the belly flop contest will take place at 9:00 after the race.

Racers may register online at www.savetheos5k.com. 5k entry costs $30 July 1 – 31 or $35 August 1 – day-of.  T-shirts are available to the first 500 participants to register.

Fun Run entry with the t-shirt costs $20 July 1 – 31 or $25 Aug. 1 – day-of. Fun Run entry without the t-shirt costs $15 July 1 – 31 or $17 Aug. 1 – day-of.

Pre-race packet pick-up will be Wednesday, Aug. 13 between 4:30-7 p.m. at The Trak Shak in Homewood.
