ALABASTER – A mobile home park across the street from Thompson Middle School is now fully in Alabaster city limits after the City Council agreed to annex a portion of the park during a recent meeting.

Council members voted unanimously to annex an L-shaped, 15-acre portion of the Keystone Mobile Home Park during a July 28 meeting, bringing the entire mobile home park into the city limits.

The 15-acre tract, which contains about 27 mobile homes, was overlooked when the rest of the mobile home park was annexed into the city in the early 1990s, said Alabaster City Attorney Jeff Brumlow.

“In the original annexation ordinance, someone forgot the L,” Brumlow said, noting Shelby County employees recently brought the oversight to the city’s attention. “They’ve always received city services, they’ve been paying city taxes and they’ve always voted in city elections.”

Brumlow said nobody challenged those residents’ ability to vote in past municipal elections.

“If nobody contested it at the time, it can’t be contested now,” Brumlow said.

City Council President Scott Brakefield said the city has always considered the entire mobile home park as part of Alabaster.

“The (annexation) paperwork never followed through,” Brakefield said. “We’ve just got to clean up some old business.”
