The Alabaster Police Department arrested Janet Racht Johnson on July 25 and charged her with one felony count of first-degree theft of property. She was released from jail on bond the same day she was arrested, according to jail records.

According to Johnson’s arrest warrant, she allegedly stole and cashed two checks belonging to the Alabaster Recreational Club totaling $6,311 between May 9 and June 10.

Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney said the arrest came after management at the Recreational Club reported “discrepancies” in the facility’s financial reports. Rigney said police investigated the claim, and “determined there was probable cause” to arrest Johnson.

The Alabaster Recreational Club is a private pool and recreation facility off Fourth Avenue Southwest.

Johnson is scheduled to appear in front of Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Dan Reeves for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 27, according to court records.

First-degree theft of property is a Class B felony. If convicted of the crime, Johnson could face between two and 20 years in prison.
