Imogene Thornell Walker

Imogene Thornell Walker, of Columbiana, was born in Rockford on Jan. 14, 1928, and passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2014.

Imogene was an active member of Columbiana United Methodist Church, a Sunday school teacher, a voracious reader, an avid gardener, a civic minded citizen and an awesome cook. She never met a stranger and was jovial and kind to everyone. She and her friends loved to solve the world’s problems over the telephone. Her latest project was working with the Eagle Scouts soliciting sponsors for Veteran Memorial pavers in front of the Columbiana City Hall.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis Ben Walker, of 66 years; four sons, Lewis Ben Walker Jr. (Marie), Ross Thomas Walker (Dawn), George Thornell Walker and Timothy Forrest Walker (Ona). Also lovingly known as Memoma, she leaves a legacy in 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She also leaves several cousins, nieces and nephews in various cities and states.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George Franklin and Ophelia Fulmer Thornell; her youngest son, Russell Fulmer Walker; four sisters, Florence Towery, Mattye Foy, Wonnie Foy and Jeanette Greer; and two brothers, Warren Thornell and George Thornell.

In her life, she was a giver to many and in her death, now with a new heavenly body, she leaves her earthly one, as a donation to science. The family will have a celebration of her life at the Columbiana United Methodist Church on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Methodist Children’s Home, Attn: Children’s Mission, 3140 Zelda Court, Montgomery, AL 36106.
