Willie Jean Northcutt Martin, 91, of Jemison, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014, at Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Alabaster.

She was born on Friday, Aug. 17, 1923, in Chilton County, daughter of the late Lester Northcutt and the late Ferrell Eugene Ellison Northcutt.

Mrs. Martin was a seamstress in the textile industry. She was a graduate of Jemison High School, class of 1940. She was also a longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and former Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. For 23 years, “Mama Jean” was a teacher’s aide at The Mitchell Center in Calera.

Surviving are her daughters, Ms. Dianne M. Childress of Thorsby and Mrs. Beverly M. Popwell (Phillip) of Clanton; sons, Mr. James C. Martin (Donna) of Alabaster and Mr. William Charles Martin (Terry) of Alabaster; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. E.C. Martin; daughter, Mrs. Jacque M. Jacob (Leslie); granddaughter, Miss Kristie Carol Childress; granddaughter, Miss Holly Elizabeth Popwell; and grandson, Mr. Phillip Martin Popwell.

Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 19 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Services will be held Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery, Jemison.
