Briarwood Christian takes win over Jackson-Olin

NORTH SHELBY — The Briarwood Christian Lions derailed the Jackson-Olin Mustangs Friday night, securing a 36-14 victory. It was their first win of the season coming off a heartbreaking one-point loss on the road to Chelsea High School.

Junior quarterback Walker Lott threw the game’s first touchdown from 18 yards out to Whit Pittman, with a two-point conversion, to give Briarwood Christian an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Lott also scored on an 8-yard run to extend the lead to 16-0, converting another two-point conversion. Briarwood scored two more times before the half with a 2-yard rushing touchdown from William Barfield and another 16-yard touchdown pass from Lott to Deraford Patillo. The Lions took a 29-0 lead into halftime.

De’Rell Freeman scored the first Jackson-Olin touchdown of the game on a screen pass from QB Quintez Ladd to cut it to 29-6, but the extra point was blocked.

In the fourth quarter, Briarwood DB Travis Hightower scored on a pick-6 going 97 yards, giving Briarwood a 36-6 lead. However, the Mustangs QB Quintez Ladd threw another touchdown to Kenyon Jones with 1:12 to go in the game, cutting Briarwood’s lead to 36-14. However, it was not be enough to mount a comeback, as the Lions took the win.

Lott went 5-for-15 for 73 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the air. He was also their leading rusher going for 12 carries on 72 yards, scoring one touchdown on the ground. The offense had a total of 211 yards.

For Jackson-Olin, QB Quintez Ladd threw for two touchdowns and one interception. De’Rell Freeman and Kenyon Jones caught the only two touchdowns of the game for the Mustangs.

Briarwood improved to 1-1 on the season as Jackson-Olin fell to 0-2.

Briarwood will travel to Homewood High School to take on the Patriots Sept. 12 as Jackson-Olin will take on the Pelham Panthers at home. Both games will be played at 7 p.m.
