HOMEWOOD — It looked as if the game would never be played, but after an hour’s worth of lightning delays, the Sept. 12 game between Homewood and Briarwood finally got under way. The two teams played until the stadium lights went out with a little over 6 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, delaying the game even further.

At the end, the Homewood Patriots convincingly beat the Briarwood Christian Lions in a 28-6 victory at Waldrop Stadium in Homewood.

Homewood took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when WR Maurice Mayo scored on a scored on a screen pass from Carson Griffis on a 38-yard touchdown. Homewood took a 14-0 lead into the half after Mayo scored on an 80-yard pic six. Briarwood was down 21-0 before QB Walker Lott scored on a two-yard run up the middle.

Homewood’s Maurice Mayo was the standout player of the night with a 38-yard touchdown catch and an interception returned 80 yards for another touchdown.

Homewood QB Carson Griffis completed 18 of 26 passes for 212 yards, throwing 1 touchdown and 1 interception.  Homewood finished with 357 yards of total offense.

On the other side, BCS QB Walker Lott was 6 of 17 for 43 yards in the air and was the team’s leading rusher with 18 carries for 79 yards. Briarwood finished with 198 yards of total offense.

BCS fell to 1-2 on the season as Homewood improved to 2-2 on the season.

BCS will host Hueytown High School and Homewood will travel to John Carroll Catholic High School next Friday. Both games will be played at 7pm.

“Defensively we played a pretty strong game, but we couldn’t put it all together,” Briarwood head coach Fred Yancey said. “Homewood sure played well.”
