ALABASTER – A 33-year-old Alabaster woman who was arrested in December 2013 and charged with giving birth to a child with traces of cocaine in its bloodstream has been rearrested after allegedly failing to appear at an early September court date.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrested Teresa Anne Harris, who lists an address on 11^th Avenue Southeast in Alabaster, on Sept. 18 on one count of failure to appear after she allegedly did not appear in court for her Sept. 4 preliminary hearing at the Shelby County Courthouse.

Before her Sept. 18 arrest, Harris had been released from jail on a $30,000 bond after she was arrested on Dec. 22, 2013 and charged with one felony count of chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced.

She is now being held in the Shelby County Jail without bond on the failure to appear charge.

According to her arrest warrant, Harris allegedly “gave birth to a child (who) tested positive for cocaine” in September 2013. The cocaine exposure allegedly “resulted in a serious physical injury,” read the arrest warrant.

According to Alabama law, a person commits chemical endangerment of a child where a controlled substance is produced when they “knowingly, recklessly or intentionally cause or permit a child to be exposed to, to ingest or inhale, or to have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance or drug paraphernalia.”

The crime is a Class C felony. If convicted, Harris could face up to 10 years in prison for the crime.
