Rhoda A. Collins, a Social Security claims representative in Bessemer, will appear at the Calera Public Library on Sept. 30 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. to explain the agency’s offerings.

The Social Security Administration offers a range of service options to its customers. It provides in-person service through our community-based field offices, hearing offices and Social Security Card Centers. It provides telephone service through its National 800 Number and its local field offices. The public may also visit the agency online at Socialsecurity.gov where they can transact certain types of business as well as obtain information about our programs and services.

People not yet receiving Social Security benefits, can view, print and save their Social Security Statement at Socialsecurity.gov. People who receive Social Security benefits can check their benefit and payment information; get a benefit verification letter, change address and phone number; and start or change direct deposit. Those receiving Supplemental Security Income will be able to get a benefit verification letter. Before you can access this information, you will need to set up a My Social Security account at Socialsecurity.gov.

 

Here’s how to set up an account:

-Visit Socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and click the My Social Security section located near the top of the page in the middle. Look for the grey box with the padlock icon.

-Click on “Create An Account.” To create a My Social Security account, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid email address, A Social Security number and A U. S. mailing address.

-Provide some personal information to verify your identity.

-Choose a username and password to create your account.

It’s that easy to set up your account. Now, you can safely and securely do business with Social Security online and view your personal Social Security information.
