Listed is a recap of county volleyball action from Sept. 2-Sept. 18.

SEPT. 2

Bulldogs knock off Shelby County, Talladega

Montevallo high split a tri-match with  the Shelby County Wildcats and the Talladega Tigers on Sept. 2. The Bulldogs swept Shelby County and Talladega for the match. In the Talladega match, Lena Buttgereit led with five kills, whole Hope Dreye had four. Isabella Howell had eight assists, while Diartize Chavez posted seven digs and Kaylee Smith had five aces.

SEPT. 4

Panthers handle Golden Gophers

Pelham took on Hueytown on Sept. 4, sweeping the Golden Gophers in three sets. In the first, Pelham took a 25-8 win. The Panthers followed with wins of 25-17 and 25-11 to seal the match win. Sarah Sudd led the team in kills with eight, while Josie Harwood had six and Kayla King had five. Maira Martinez had five aces in the win.

SEPT. 7

Lions take Pleasant Valley Tournament

The Briarwood Christian School Lions volleyball squad participated in the Sandy Hook Invitational hosted by Pleasant Valley High School on Sept. 7. The Lions opened up with Sylvania High, dismissing the Rams in two sets, each by the score of 25-17. Senior Lauren Palmer led the team with 10 kills and an ace, while fellow senior Rachel Nix had three kills, four aces and three digs. Junior Rachel Walz had 14 digs and an ace. The Lions then faced Westminster of Huntsville, taking down the Wildcats in two sets, 25-12 and 25-16. Stat leaders were Palmer with eight kills, senior Christie Robertson with nine  assists, two aces and two digs, and Nix with six kills, two aces and five digs. The Lions then knocked off host Pleasant Valley, 25-22 and 25-15. Nix posted seven kills, an ace and eight digs, while Walz had three aces and six digs. In the finals, Briarwood took on Geraldine, capturing the tournament by a score of 27-25 and 25-18. Palmer led with 10 kills, senior Josie Slaughter had two kills, and Molly McKenzie posted seven assists and four aces. The Lions moved to 11-2 following the win. 

SEPT. 9

Panthers sweep Mustangs on the road

The Pelham Panthers headed to Ensley to take on the Jackson-Olin in a Class 6A, Area 8 match. The Panthers swept J-O in three sets, 25-10, 25-12 and 25-9. Sarah Sudd led the team in kills with 11, while Jordan Allison had four digs and Katie Monit had nine aces and Maira Martinez had seven.

Hornets pace Shelby County in match

The Chelsea Hornets travelled to Columbiana to take on the Shelby County Wildcats. The Hornets took the ‘Cats in a sweep, knocking off the home team 25-18, 25-14 and 25-16. Madison Turner led the Hornets with 11 assists, 10 kills, eight aces and seven digs, while Taylor Hackett turned in eight assists, Lexie Riggins had five kills, two blocks and two aces.

Montevallo High shuts down Oak Grove

The Montevallo high volleyball team defeated Oak Grove High School in an area volleyball match played at MHS on Tuesday.

Montevallo won in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-16 and 25-9.

Kaylee Smith and Tamera Fletcher led the Lady Dawgs with 12 and nine kills, respectively. The Lady Dawgs collected 27 service aces as a team, led by Ashley Williams, who had seven. Defensively, Meredith Goggins had a team-high 20 digs.

SEPT. 15

Coosa Valley shuts door on Senators

The Coosa Valley Academy Rebels took on the Morgan Academy Senators in a Sept. 15 matchup. The Rebels got the best of the Senators in three sets, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-20. Eighth grader Allee Slaten recorded six aces, senior Hope Myrick had nine kills, two aces and five digs, while fellow senior Rae Rae Holmes had five kills.

SEPT. 16

Pelham pounces on Oak Mountain

The Pelham Panthers travelled to Oak Mountain to square off with the Eagles in a non-classifcation match, with Pelham sweeping the Eagles, 3-0. Autumn Hiett had 11 kills, Erin Hines had eight kills and Sarah Sudd had seven with five aces. Hayley Brisendine had 14 digs while Autumn Hiett had 10, and Emily Jackson posted 31 assists. With the win, Pelham moved to 14-6 overall.

SEPT. 18

Hornets sweep Pell City

It was all Chelsea High in a Sept. 18 matchup with Pell City High School, as the Hornets swept the Panthers, 3-0. Chelsea captured the three sets, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-10. Madison Turner had 11 assists, 11 digs, right kills and four aces, while Lexie Riggins had 11 kills, four aces and three digs. Taylro Hackett had 13 assists and seven kills. The win moved Chelsea to 8-4 on the season, and 1-2 in area play.

Panthers shut down Jaguars

Pelham took on Spain Park on Sept. 18 and swept the Jags, 25-21, 25-10 and 25-13. Erin Hines led the team in kills with nine, while Emorie Long had eight. Sarah Sudd had four digs, while Kayla King had three. Josie Harwood had 10 aces and Hayley Brisendine had five. Emily Jackson had 32 assists.

Briarwood takes down Homewood on the road

Home-field advantage proved to be little deterrent to the Briarwood Christian Lions, as the squad travelled to Homewood and swept the Patriots, 25-11, 26-24 and 25-12. Senior Lauren Palmer led the way for the Lions with 10 kills and three digs, while fellow seniors Rachel Nix had eight kills, two aces, six digs and a block assist and Christie Robinson had 11 assists and nine digs. Senior Josie Slaughter had five kills.
